America: Land of the free, Home of the brave.
Era il 1997 quando per la prima volta misi piede sul suolo Americano.
Più precisamente mi trovavo a Las Vegas, per motivi lavorativi purtroppo, che non mi diedero il tempo necessario per godermi appieno quella fantastica città.Avevo solo 19 anni allora e arrivare negli USA, per me era davvero un “California Dream” che si realizzava.
Già a quei tempi nella mia raccolta di Cds, spiccavano i nomi di Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain. La mia colonna sonora di quel viaggio nella città del gioco, era l’ultimo album degli Eagles, ( “The Very Best of the Eagles” del 1994), che mi sparavo nelle orecchie mentre la mattina presto ci recavamo in fiera. Era fantastico vedere tutti quei pick-up trucks, bere cappuccini extra-long e fare colazione insieme a dei “veri americani”.
Ero elettrizzata, adrenalinica.
Fu in quell’occasione che comprai il mio primo paio di cowboy boots, che sono stati ai miei piedi per ben 10 anni, prima di essere riposti, consunti e consumati, in un cassetto in ricordo di quel viaggio.
Una sera ci trovammo a una festa, organizzata dalla fiera stessa, all’hotel MGM : avete presente? L’MGM è l’albergo di Las Vegas dove si svolgono gli incontri di pugliato più famosi. E’ un posto immenso, come del resto tutto lì. C’era della musica disco di sottofondo e, ad un certo punto, un ragazzo dell’Ohio mi si avvicina per fare amicizia e mi chiede come mai non ballo. Io gli rispondo che semplicemente non mi piace quella musica. Allora lui mi chiede “What kind of music do you like?” (che tipo di musica ti piace?) e io: “COUNTRY MUSIC!”. Lui sorpreso mi risponde: “Country music? And you are from Italy?” (Country music? e vieni dall’Italia?). Poi mi porta una mano sulla fronte ed esclama “Have you got the fever???” (Hai la febbre???). Scoppiamo a ridere entrambi.
Ma era proprio così: la musica country mi accompagna da sempre.
E quindi, come poter mancare al concerto del grande Phil Vassar in esibizione proprio qui, a due passi da casa, a La Cantina di Lentate sul Seveso??? Evento a cui non potevo certamente mancare!
Arrivo al locale per le 21,00. Il tempo di salutare amici vari e di bersi una birra in compagnia e il momento attesissimo arriva. Phil Vassar sale sul palco con i suoi musicisti. Che emozione!!!
Dopo una breve presentazione il concerto ha inizio: come non amare questo genere di musica che sa sempre dare mille emozioni a chi la ascolta? Piano piano, non resisto e mi avvicino al palco per scattare delle foto più da vicino. Phil e la sua band interagiscono col pubblico e non mancano battute, brindisi (bevono solo birra per rinfrescare l’ugola) e canzoni su richiesta! Durante il concerto ho potuto ascoltare alcuni tra i pezzi più belli dell’artista: da Carlene ad American Child, da Just Another Day in Paradise a Six-Pack Summer. Ogni canzone veniva introdotta dalla relativa spiegazione, dove Phil racconta da dove prende l’ispirazione. quando compone. Le sue canzoni parlano di vita vissuta, amori finiti, donne e amicizia.
Finito il bellissimo concerto, Phil e il suo staff hanno firmato autografi e scattato foto coi fans. I ragazzi della band sono stati molto accoglienti e sono riuscita anche a scambiare qualche chiacchiera col chitarrista Jeff Smith: quella era la loro ultima data del tour Europeo, il giorno dopo sarebbero tornati a casa, a Nashville. Avevano toccato l’Irlanda, la Scozia, la Germania e chi l’avrebbe mai detto di vederli anche qui?
Parlare con loro è stata una buona dose adrenalinica: amo l’America, amo gli americani e l’amore che provano verso la loro terra natia e soprattutto amo la loro musica, che racchiude in sè le strade infinite, le praterie, gli oceani… da percorrere sulle ali della libertà.

It was 1997 when, for the first time in my life, I arrived in the USA. I was in Las Vegas for my job: that’s why I didn’t have enough time to visit that great city.
I was only 19 years old and, being in the USA, was my “California Dream” which came true. At those times I already heard country music and I listen to WIllie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain. My soundtrack for that trip was the last album of The Eagles. I listen to it at high volume in the morning when I went to fair I partecipated. It was wonderful to see those great pick-up trucks, to drink some extra-long cappuccino and to take breakfast with “some true Americans people”!!.
I was electrified, full of adrenalin.
I bought there my first pair of cowboy boots, which have been to my feet for 10 years before I put them in a drawer.
A night we were to a party at MGM hotel. There was disco-music. A guy from Ohio, approached me and ask me: “why don’t you dance? You don’t like music?” and I said “Yes, that’s right”. “What kind of music do you like?” He asked me. “Country music” I replied. “Country music? And you are from Italy?” then he put a hand to my forehead and said “Have you got fever???” and we begin to laugh!
It was right: I love and always loved country music. That’s why I cannot let the opportunity to see Phil Vassar live slip! He has had a concert just near my town!
It has been great listen to him!! A great emotion!!!
After a brief presentation the concert begin. I go under the stage to take more pics of the band. They are great, speaking and laughing with the crowd.
We have listened to the best songs: from Carlene to American Child, from Just Another Day in Paradise to Six-Pack Summer. Every song was introduced by Phil who explained how he takes the right idea to write. Finished the beatiful concert, Phil has left his autograph to his fans and I have had the time to speak a little bit with th guitarist Jeff Smith: that night was the last in Europe. The day after they come back to US in Nashville.
It has been nice to speak with Jeff and the rest of the band: they are great people!
I love America, I love Americans and their love for their country. I love their music which contains the long highways, the prairies, the oceans … to travel on the wings of freedom.
